How to turn a MOV into a GIF
- Drop the MOV file into the box above, or click it to pick one.
- Set the second the GIF should start at and how long it should run. Short is better: a GIF has no compression worth the name.
- Choose a width and a frame rate. 360 pixels at 10 frames a second is the sensible default and is already selected.
- Click the button and download the GIF.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my GIF so large?
Because a GIF stores every frame as its own image with no real compression. Three seconds at 360 pixels wide is a manageable file. Ten seconds at 480 wide and 15 frames a second is not. Cut the length first, then the width, then the frame rate, in that order.
How long can the GIF be?
As long as you like, but past about ten seconds the file gets unwieldy and most places that accept GIFs start refusing it. If you want a long clip that plays by itself, a muted MP4 is the better answer and every social platform prefers it.
Why do the colours look wrong?
A GIF can only hold 256 colours per frame, so gradients, skin tones and video noise get approximated. It is the format, not the conversion. Footage with flat colours and clear shapes survives it well; a sunset does not.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No. GIF has no audio at all and never has. If the sound matters, convert to MP4 or WebM instead: both play automatically on every platform that used to want GIFs, and both are far smaller.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The video engine runs inside your browser, so the file is read on your device and never leaves it. No account, no upload, no watermark.
Is it really free?
Yes. No sign-up, no trial, no watermark and no limit on how many you make. The site is paid for by ads.
